Gordon Hughes is a leading Australian performer, composer, educator and business manager. He graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in 1996 also attaining the distinction of being the first person in Australia to be awarded a Licentiate in percussion performance from Trinity College of Music, London.Gordon currently is a very active educator and is in demand as a conductor, performer, clinician and adjudicator. As a composer, his works have been performed throughout Australia, the UK and the USA to critical acclaim with his success recently recognised with acceptance to the Australian Music Centre as an associate composer. Gordon has recently been elected to the Australia Council's Register of Peers.

Of all Elgar`s musical output this variation is without doubt one of his most lyrical and loved works. Nimrod is beautifully arranged to feature the mellow, haunting sound of the marimba and allow the players room to express in music what words can never achieve. Throughout history, composers have studied, copied out and arranged the scores of venerated elders in the hope of absorbing (as if by osmosis) what it is that makes great music. It was from this humble beginning that the arranger took to this emotion-charged movement from Elgars famous set of variations. Utmost in the arrangers mind was ensuring meticulous dedication to the original score and the creation of a work that highlights the immense power and lyricism capable of being expressed by tuned percussion instruments.
