Programme Notes / Performance Details :

Tank Girl was part of a collaborative project, Musical Paintings with Australian visual artist, Dan Brock. Inspired by Brocks painting, "Tank Girl", based on the cult comic strip heroine of the same name, this composition features an insistent rhythmic ostinato on the marimba, virtuosic vibraphone lines and a touch of Afro-Cuban flavour. Highly virtuosic writing for both soloists is a feature of this marimba orientated work. Each instrument in this explosive duet is given a contrasting main theme. Players exchange roles as both accompanist and soloist a duel of the most exciting type. The vibraphone expresses its jazz history in its solo role with the marimba evoking an Afro-Cuban mood before seducing all with its Spanish/tango inspired cadenza. This highly tonal work concludes as evocatively as it began; easing the listener back down to earth hair slightly ruffled, heart beating faster.

Extra Performance Notes: 4 Mallets per player.  Piece can be played with a 4 1/3 octave marimba OR a 5 octave marimba.
