Composer / Arranger : Pye, David
Composer / Arranger Details:

David Pye is one of Western Australia's most experienced musicians, working in Perth as a composer, percussionist and conductor since 1981. In 1983 he founded the Nova Ensemble and over twenty years has developed the group into Western Australia's leading contemporary music ensemble, commissioning, writing, performing and recording the music of our local composers. In 1989 David turned to composition, and his music has been widely recognised for its accessibility and popularity with audiences of all ages.

A keen interest in the music of South India and Western Java permeates his compositional style. Recent developments include the use of pre-recorded environmental sounds in instrumental works and the use of free improvisation as both textural and structural elements in his compositions. His full-length music-theatre work, The Drummers of Gilgamesh, was awarded the Australian Music Centre/Australian Performing Rights Association Award for Instrumental Work of the Year for 2002.

Programme Notes / Performance Details :

Pulsating marimba chords evoke cool, dazzling space to open Rebana Loops. Sections link hypnotically or simply explode from one and other, rhythm-drenched. Players dance energetically; driving forward, surging, speeding along the highway laid before them.1984 - Omphalo Centric Lecture released, 2006 - Rebana Loops released. Rebana Loops will undoubtedly rank as one of the most outstanding percussion quartets written. The work had its inception in the various aspects of Indonesian music, particularly the technical aspects of the Javanese Rebana Players. Rebana are small, exceedingly simple hand drums. The Rebana revels in creating music of great excitement and interest through the use of rapidly changing, short interlocking patterns and contrasts in dynamics, tone and playing techniques. A not so short ride in a very fast machine. A complete recording of this work can be found on the REVOLUTIONS CD, available from

Extra Performance Notes: All keyboard parts require 4 Mallet playing.
