Dr. J. B. Smith is Professor of Music and the Coordinator of Percussion Studies in the School of Music at Arizona State University.  He is internationally recognized as a performer, composer, educator and conductor.

He directs the ASU Contemporary Percussion Ensemble and has performed with a variety of ensembles including The Desert`s Edge Clarinet-Percussion Duo with Dr. Robert Spring, Crossing 32nd Street, Ensemble 21, The Daniel Lentz Group, Summit Brass and The Phoenix Symphony. One of the first pieces to notate conga technique. Includes a notation key and tutorial in the back of the score for those unfamiliar with playing congas. Traditional Latin rhythms comprise this ostinato-based piece. Player 1 acts as a soloist throughout, though the other players have improvisation opportunities as well. Includes CD accompaniment

an excellent piece for the older percussionist that has an understanding of rhythm, but lacks hand drumming techniques. the piece covers the basic conga sounds, and has an insert explaining proper technique.
