| Programme Notes / Performance Details :
3/5 was composed for a small percussion quintet of a beginner/ intermediate level. The piece consists of three miniatures each is 1-1&1/2 minutes long. The instrumentation is as follows: Xylophone, Vibraphone, Bass drum ,Triangle, Claves, 3 Snare drums , 3 Tomtoms, 2 Suspended cymbals, 5 temple Blocks, Cowbell. The first (Maestoso quasi legato) presents a simple melody that fluctuates between G minor and G mixolydian mode. The melody is played in mini imitations between the Xylophone and the Vibe while three tom-toms play an ostinato figure on the drum rims. The atmosphere is serene, sarabande like. The accompanying figure become tenser and gradually more and more of the drumheads get used onto a climax from which the music gradually fades away. An ostinato is in the center of the second movement as well (Allegro). This time a more complex one with many small variations which create a thick, changing colorful bed of sounds on which the Vibe softly plays eerie chords that create a somewhat mysterious atmosphere. The last Scherzo is very energetic, in contrast to its predecessors. The drums play a quick, powerful march like figure in unison. After a while the Xylophone joins in with a cheerful, almost bi- tonal, melody. Unlike its predecessors this movement ends in a rousing conclusion! |
