Programme Notes / Performance Details :

Classic Suite consists of three contrasting movements arranged fast-slow-fast (Song, Hymn, and Fantasy). Each of the three movements can stand alone or can be played all together as a suite. The first two movements use standard meters (4/4, 3/4, etc.) while the third movement is set primarily in 7/8 and 6/8. Accessible to any audience, the piece employs special techniques, such as independent rolls, glissandi, and playing with the shafts of the mallets.

“Classic Suite for marimba” is a fun, 3-movement work that is suitable for a young marimbist. The first movement, “Song,” develops a scale-based melody out of a 16th-note rhythmic pedal. There is a chorale section in the middle, followed by a 4-mallet, block-chord version of the opening melody. “Hymn” is a beautiful chorale that can be used to explore how different roll speeds can shape the piece. “Fantasy,” the third movement, is an adventurous 7/8 journey that uses mallet shafts and rattle sticks (marimba mallets with shaker beads) to create unique sounds. This is a relatively unknown piece, but is full of memorable themes, varying styles, and great educational opportunities.
