Programme Notes / Performance Details :

"Udu na oku Igba" is an Igbo name with two meanings- "Drum of Fire" and "Drum of Peace." The piece is constructed as a solo feature for Udu drummer with a percussion trio as accompaniment. The form of the piece is very simple and is almost entirely an open-ended solo for the featured percussionist. The soloist should ideally have at least 2 or 3 various Udu drums (or other similar instruments, as seen fit) along with another small Udu drum for one of the accompanying players. Metal canisters and egg shakers should be avoided, using more natural, authentic shakers such as Caxixi and Shekere. The riq part can be substituted with a small tambourine. This piece is a great recital-closer, but also works great as something to throw some variation into a percussion ensemble concert. Enjoy!
