| Composer / Arranger Details: Ryan R. Laney earned his B.M.E. degree graduating Magna Cum Laude at The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO in May 2010 where he studied closely with Prof. Gray Barrier, Dr. Richard Mayne, and Dr. Kenneth Singleton. He was the Pride of the Rockies Marching Band percussion instructor/arranger for the 2009 marching season. Ryan is an avid composer and has had compositions for wind, percussion, and marching groups performed around the world. His most recent major projects include "Latin Suite for Woodwind Quintet" for the Maesta Woodwind Quintet of Northridge, CA, "The Dahlstrom Rag" for the Tau chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and a saxophone concerto to be premiered Spring 2012 by the Kansas State University Wind Ensemble. Ryan arranges and distributes music through his website www.RLaneyPercussion.com, and is a member of the Percussive Arts Society and the Music Educator`s National Conference. |

| Programme Notes / Performance Details : "Udu na oku Igba" is an Igbo name with two meanings- "Drum of Fire" and "Drum of Peace." The piece is constructed as a solo feature for Udu drummer with a percussion trio as accompaniment. The form of the piece is very simple and is almost entirely an open-ended solo for the featured percussionist. The soloist should ideally have at least 2 or 3 various Udu drums (or other similar instruments, as seen fit) along with another small Udu drum for one of the accompanying players. Metal canisters and egg shakers should be avoided, using more natural, authentic shakers such as Caxixi and Shekere. The riq part can be substituted with a small tambourine. This piece is a great recital-closer, but also works great as something to throw some variation into a percussion ensemble concert. Enjoy! |
