Composer / Arranger : Carey, Christian
Composer / Arranger Details: Christian Carey is active as a composer, performer and music theorist. He received degrees from the Juilliard School (BM in voice performance), Boston University (MM in composition), and Rutgers University (Ph.D. in composition and theory); his principal teachers were Charles Wuorinen and Lukas Foss. Carey’s scholarly interests include post-tonal theory, contemporary concert music, composition, American music, popular music, and jazz.
His doctoral dissertation discussed the Fifth String Quartet of Elliott Carter. He’s since contributed several articles and reviews about the composer, including a cover story for Signal to Noise in 2006. On Carter’s 100th birthday, he gave a paper at Colloque: Hommage á Elliott Carter at IRCAM in Paris and was interviewed about the composer on National Public Radio. He’s also written about Charles Wuorinen, Milton Babbitt, Morton Feldman, Terry Riley, and David Rakowski for Tempo, Sequenza 21, and Musicworks. His article on the late works of Ralph Shapey appears in the current issue of Perspectives of New Music.
Carey’s compositions have been performed by the New York New Music Ensemble, Locrian Chamber Players, Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, Cassatt String Quartet, Dal Suono Sommerso, singing cellist Jody Redhage, and the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble. In 2004, he was commissioned to write a work for orchestra and live locomotive by the Music Festival of the Hamptons and the Long Island Railroad. The result, Mourning Madrid, commemorated the then-recent Madrid train bombings. Since then, he’s frequently been called upon to create works for unconventional forces. Current composition projects include a solo work for drum set (using only brushes) for percussionist Peter Jarvis, a work for singing violist Wendy Richman, and incidental music (using prepared piano plus live electronics) for an Off-Broadway theatrical adaptation of the Epic of Gilgameth. His compositions are published by File Under Music (ASCAP).
He is an Assistant Professor of Composition, History, and Theory at Westminster Choir College of Rider University and Senior Editor at Sequenza 21 (weblog: www.sequenza21.com/carey).
