Programme Notes / Performance Details :

Evergreen (2010) began as a tribute to my dear friend Ryan Camden. Ryan was an extremely talented musician and teacher whom I had the privilege of knowing as a friend and colleague. An accident took him from this world far, far too soon.
The piece is roughly centered on pitches and motives found in the opening chorale statement. Soon after, the main body features rapid mallet permutations and mixed time signatures. Harmonically, Evergreen seeks to express a combined aura of emptiness and fond reflection.
It is well known that evergreen trees remain unchanged throughout each season, even under extremes of temperature and climate. This is how I remember Ryan – strong, stoic, mature. Evergreen ends with a high-register fade-out, a ghostly echo of an abbreviated life.
– Benjamin Finley
