Amalgam Publishing is a collective of musicians. Our goal is to produce new music and teaching methods that represent the state of our art, and we are inviting people to join our community to provide an outlet for their creative and pedagogical work. We believe that the terrain of music is changing, influenced by the connectivity of the internet, niche communities, and a devaluation of art to society. As we adapt to these changes, we hope to build a network of musicians that can maneuver this terrain.

First Impressions was written for the University of Oklahoma Steel Band, directed by Andrew Richardson, for their 2011-2012 concert season.

Performance Notes:

Feel free to manipulate the form of the piece to fit your particular needs and strengths. Improvised solos are permitted and encouraged.

Although the drum part is fully notated it is merely a suggestion. It is meant to facilitate an accurate performance in the given style (samba). Drummers that are comfortable with improvisation are free to experiment with differnent ideas for grooves and fills.

There is an optional percussion part included but feel free to add more instruments than what is in the score if you have more players.
