Josh Gottry (b. 1974) earned a BM in Percussion Performance at Northern Arizona University and a MM in Composition at Arizona State University and has successfully established himself as a highly regarded percussion instructor and performer and as an internationally recognized composer.
Mr. Gottry currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Music at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, teaching courses in music theory, percussion, and composition. Additionally, he works with percussion ensembles and private percussion students at all grade levels as a clinician and within his private lesson studio. Mr. Gottry`s performance record spans over 20 years with experience including professional orchestras, music theater, community and chamber ensembles, as well as solo performances and recitals. In 2011, he was selected to serve as a teaching artist with the Arizona Commission on the Arts, presenting clinics and residencies on percussion and composition for schools and after-school programs.
Mr. Gottry`s first composition, "Irrelevant" for solo marimba, earned him an ASCAP Young Composer Competition grant in 1995. Since that time, he has been selected for numerous ASCAP Plus awards and has created nearly fifty published works. Josh Gottry is a member of the Percussive Arts Society and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He is a clinician for Mike Balter Mallets, Pro-Mark Drumsticks, Remo Drumheads, and Yamaha Percussion. Mr. Gottry recently served three years as President and six years as Vice-President for the Arizona State Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. He is currently Chair of the PAS Composition Contest Committee, a member of the PAS Education Committee, and a new literature reviewer for the Percussive Arts Society. |Programme Notes / Performance Details :Outside the Box (by Josh Gottry & Jonny Woodbury) is a collection of four progressive solos and one duet for cajon. Each piece is intended to develop comfort with a variety of sounds and to assist the performer in creating a vocabulary of idiomatic and creative grooves for the instrument. Included are program/performance notes for each piece, a instrument key and diagram, and five recital appropriate works for cajon. Pocket Full of Rocks is an excellent introductory work combining rock, hip-hop, funk, and shuffle grooves into a medium-easy solo. Box Tops incorporates additional sounds (knocking, sliding, fingertips) in a mixed meter rock feel. Oxidation expands the sound palette, especially in terms of footwork, in a medium-advanced solo. Combinatorics utilizes traditional Peruvian rhythms, additional implements, and extensive independence between limbs in an advanced work for solo cajon. Slide Rule is based loosely on a Brazilian baião and exploits many of the different elements featured in the solo works, but in a longer piece that allows like-minded individuals to enjoy performing together. Make sure these pieces groove and the audience is inspired to go find themselves their own musical box!|
