Craig Mason attended the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, where he received a Comprehensive Music Education Degree (Vocal, Instrumental, and General). Craig also earned a Master’s Degree in Music Education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He has taught 5-12 Band and Choir in Pepin, Wisconsin, 7th grade band and 8th grade band at Stoughton Middle School and band, theater, music theory, jazz, marching band, and chamber ensembles at Stoughton High School. Craig has extensive experience with jazz education and a rich history with the drum and bugle corps genre, dating back to 1976. He was a performer and teacher for the Madison Scouts until 1992, taught several music ensembles in Europe, and is currently teaching and writing music for the Kilties drum and bugle corps. Craig was selected for the Kohl Fellowship in 1989 and has been selected for Who`s Who in America`s Teachers numerous times, as well as being selected for Who`s Who in America, and has been selected as the most influential music teacher in Wisconsin, by School Band and Orchestra magazine. He has taught many band clinics, judges marching band contests and solo & ensemble festivals. He has arranged and composed for many marching bands, concert bands, chamber ensembles, brass bands, and drum and bugle corps around the United States, Europe and Japan. He is also the conductor of the 2012 Section 2 NABBA champion Madison Brass Band ( In addition, he also writes drill for marching bands

So often the cabasa is under-used and under-appreciated. Here is an opportunity to showcase some of the techniques that are possible on this instrument. As always, percussion should be not just heard, but also seen. Be sure to place yourselves in a manner so that all ausience members can see you and your instruments. You may add visuals and explore the possible cemedic value of these pieces.


There are many sizes of cabasa available. These trios are for three different sizes. The greater the size difference, the greater the sound variety. Here is an example:


Performance technique

1. Regular notation should be performed with the "regular" cabasa technique: Rotate one wrist while holding the handle, and cupping the metal beads with the other.


2. The notes that are an x and on the upper line, should be performed by tapping the beads with the fingertips of the hand that normally is cupping the beads.


3. The arrow that points to the right, indicates to play the note to its full value (not stacatto).


4. The arrow that points down and right, indicates to roll the cabasa down the front part of the leg to the knee (quadricep).


5. The arrow that points up and left, indicates to rol the cabasa up the front part of the leg from the knee.

6. A normal headed note on the top line means to play on your from the shoulder to the elbow.


7. A diamond head note below the bottom line, indicates to stomp the opposite leg that will be played on the next beat.


8. A marked roll is done by simply holding the cabasa as normal and quickly moving the wrist that holds tha handle, back and forth very quickly, while the left hand is on the beads.
