Programme Notes / Performance Details :

The whole idea of “Off the Beat” is that midway through the song, the beat literally becomes “off.” That is, the beat switches. What would normally be your downbeat now becomes the upbeat. This is because of the meter change to 3/8. I have included an audio of myself playing the song over the kit, with the the bass drum on the upbeats and the hi-hat on the downbeats. This makes it easier to recognize the switch, and also helps develop the timing of the piece. As you listen to the 3/8 bar and onward, notice how the hi-hat changes to become the downbeat, and the bass drum is then on the upbeats, or on the “ands.” I could have switched the meter back again as to preserve the normal upbeat of the piece, but I chose not to. I think it grooves!
