Matthew Moore (b. 1985) is a percussionist, educator, composer, arranger, and adjudicator in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. He is the director of percussion at Griffin Middle School, and is a member of the percussion instruction team at Wakeland High School and Flower Mound High School.

Mr. Moore`s experience in music is highly diverse, beginning with piano, percussion, and vocal studies from the age of five, continuing through horn in middle and high school band before focusing on percussion in college and beyond. From 2008 to 2010, Moore was the Assistant Director of Percussion Studies at the Colleyville Heritage High School cluster in Colleyville, TX, including Colleyville and Heritage Middle Schools. Here he served as percussion ensemble director, drumline instructor, and primary percussion private lesson teacher. In 2009, Moore arranged the front ensemble score for the Lone Star Drumline Competition marching division winner and "best pit" caption award winner Colleyville-Heritage drumline. While serving as Graduate Assistant at Texas Christian University from 2010 to 2012, Moore arranged for and conducted the undergraduate percussion ensemble, taught undergraduate private lessons, rehearsed the drumline and steel band, and performed other instructional and organizational duties.

Moore has received many compositional accolades. His piece for vibraphone and recorded accompaniment, Music for Vibraphone and Electronica, is winner of the 2011 Jonathan Durington Award for Music Composition. This composition plus numerous others for percussion ensemble and solo percussion have been published by C. Alan Publications. The award-winning Texas Christian University Percussion Orchestra premiered Critical Mass, his new work for large percussion ensemble spring 2012. Jabberwocky, for solo soprano and piano accompaniment, was chosen to be performed at the 2011 Fort Worth Contemporary Music Fund Call for Scores concert. In 2008, Moore received first place in the Kentucky Music Educators Association`s Collegiate Composition category with his piece for solo marimba, Prelude. He went on to perform the winning piece at the KMEA 2008 convention at Whitney Hall in the Kentucky Center for the Arts.

Prior to living in Texas, Moore instructed and arranged for various high school, collegiate, and independent programs in Kentucky, including the Campbellsville University Marching Band, Speed Indoor Percussion, and 2008 Bands of America Class A Grand National Champion Adair County High School. As a marching performer, he was a member of numerous Drum Corps and Winter Guard International programs, including Carolina Crown, Southwind, and 2008 World Champion Rhythm X Indoor Percussion.

Moore holds a Master`s degree from Texas Christian University, TX and a Bachelor’s degree with honors from Campbellsville University, KY. He lives with his wife Aline in Frisco, Texas.

In nuclear physics, the term “critical mass” refers to the smallest amount of fissile material needed for a sustained nuclear chain reaction. The term is also broadly used in a number of fields from business to socioeconomics to software development to encapsulate similar notions, usually in regards to the stage at which a process becomes self-sustaining. Critical Mass for 12 player percussion ensemble portrays this idea as it gains, and at times loses its ability to sustain itself over the course of the piece’s three sections. Just as critical mass and a stable momentum seem to have been finally achieved in the final portion of the piece, the ensemble struggles to remain in control and finds catastrophe imminent...
