Composer / Arranger Details:
Josh Gottry (b. 1974) earned a BM in Percussion Performance at Northern Arizona University and a MM in Composition at Arizona State University and has successfully established himself as a highly regarded percussion instructor and performer and as an internationally recognized composer.

Mr. Gottry currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Music at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, teaching courses in music theory, percussion, and composition.  Additionally, he works with percussion ensembles and private percussion students at all grade levels as a clinician and within his private lesson studio. Mr. Gottry`s performance record spans over 20 years with experience including professional orchestras, music theater, community and chamber ensembles, as well as solo performances and recitals.  In 2011, he was selected to serve as a teaching artist with the Arizona Commission on the Arts, presenting clinics and residencies on percussion and composition for schools and after-school programs.

Mr. Gottry`s first composition, "Irrelevant" for solo marimba, earned him an ASCAP Young Composer Competition grant in 1995.  Since that time, he has been selected for numerous ASCAP Plus awards and has created nearly fifty published works.  Having come to composition through his musical pursuits as a percussionist, he is uniquely able to create works for percussion that are engaging, pedagogical, and brilliantly creative.  His compositions, which have been performed throughout the world at schools, festivals, and international conventions, are credited with “intelligent scoring and attention to detail” that highlight “beautiful and calm unpretentious melodies and soundscapes.”

Josh Gottry is a member of the Percussive Arts Society and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He is a clinician for Mike Balter Mallets, Pro-Mark Drumsticks, Remo Drumheads, and Yamaha Percussion.  Mr. Gottry recently served three years as President and six years as Vice-President for the Arizona State Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society.  He is currently Chair of the PAS Composition Contest Committee, a member of the PAS Education Committee, and a new literature reviewer for the Percussive Arts Society.  Mr. Gottry has been published in several issues of Percussive Notes and has presented clinics at the Arizona Music Educators Association Conference and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.

Programme Notes / Performance Details :

The concept behind Transitions is that of a single day and the gradual shifts and changes within it. There are three distinct but related segments in the piece in a slow-fast-slow format of uninterrupted movements entitled Dawn, Day, and Dusk. Within the faster middle movement is a percussion cadenza. The melodic and harmonic content of "Transitions" is based almost entirely on the B half-whole octatonic scale. The opening pitches in the solo vibraphone form the primary motive of the work and bring continuity to the piece as a whole. After the first statement, this motive is immediately restated in the accompaniment, later used as punctuation tones in the cadenza, and finally restated in retrograde in the final measures of the work, again in the solo vibraphone, as an indication of the inevitable connection to the start of a new day. "Transitions" is truly an exciting and challenging work for the soloist including virtuosic material on both pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments. This work will captivate any audience with its musical contrasts and fascinate them with the visually stimulating choreography in the soloist`s performance.
