Programme Notes / Performance Details :

Chrysoprase was first composed for a performance during my Senior year in high school. Originally, the piece was in two large parts split between drum set and timpani. I revisited with piece several years later and removed the timpani section while expanding and revising the drum set portion of the composition. Chrysoprase was composed to take advantage of the melodic aspect of the tom toms using a very short, simple, and easily-identified theme. I also intended to integrate the bass drum into the texture as an equal voice rather than just as a time-keeper. When Chrysoprase was first composed, I was going through a phase where I was fascinated with polyrhythmic structures. The centerpiece of the composition is a result of this influence. It is a large section that has each limb working in a different time signature.
