Piece Title : Eclaires (Sonata for solo SD)

Programme Notes / Performance Details :

B

Eclaires is a sonata for solo snare Drum in four movements.

The first movement Qassida is in a quick ,incessant 5/8 7/8 rhythm incorporating many flams, drags, some rolls and making extensive use of various methods of playing on the drum (rim, shell, edge center and stick shots). This movement serves as a sort of introduction to the whole work.

The second movement- Dance is a bright and light jazz waltz played with brushes playing with the snares on/offB with occasional 2/4 or 4/4 measures to break the waltz feel. The middle section is slower and is played with timpani mallets, incorporating loud snare snaps, and the last section goes back to the quick jazzy feel, with fast changes between brushes and Mallets bringing this scherzo like movement to an exciting end .

Canto is played with the fingers exclusivelly. It is abstractly written giving the performer much freedom and exploringB various sound producing techniques usingB hand/finger playing .By the middle of the movement the player isB asked to sing a written melody while self accompanying him/her self in a semi improvisatory manner. With the melody having been repeated three times the movement ends quietly and mysteriously with a recapitulation of the the beginning whileB fading away.

The last movement March is written in rudimentary style with a slightly modern twist. A nine measure theme is variated upon and the movement incorporates some timeB changes that also serve asB tempo changers. Towards the end there is an acceleration which leads to an exhilarating end.
